Beautiful fineart landscape photography....everyday

Come out with us to learn how to take our beautiful sunrise landscapes

The Day That would like to invite you to come out with us to experience what it’s like to take our beautiful landscape photographs so you can show your readers what it’s like to capture the beauty of Cornwall.

We have been going out every day since 2005 and now have 35,000 dawn pictures in our collection. People order them as personalised pieces of art taken at the very start of a day that is special to them such as a Wedding day or the day they have a baby.

We will teach you how it’s done and get you to take your very own sunrise photograph.

You will be able to get at first hand experience what it’s like to capture all the beauty of a Cornish dawn with it’s beautiful light, landscape and sounds.

After the shoot we will process your very own pictures at our lovely studio and print, mount and frame your very own sunrise picture for you to hang in your home or office.

Mary Mary Jewellery

We have many kinds of wonderful offices around us here at The Day That, and the closest to us is Mary Mary, a fantastic business that specialises in making colourful and quirky jewellery from a variety of materials, including gemstones, pearls. The founder of Mary Mary, (surprisingly called Mary) sells nationwide, travelling to prestigious craft shows, up market galleries, London’s Covent Garden Market, and of course on her website.  Like us, Mary’s top priority is customer satisfaction and she’s built up a solid foundation of loyal customers and collectors of her work. She has designed and made unique individual pieces, that are not listed on her website, by request from her customers. Mary has been selling her work for over twenty-three years and always finds new inspiration for her jewels, and she likes nothing more than hearing from a satisfied customer!

The Atlantic Blanket Company

The Atlantic Blanket Company was started by the lovely Jo Riley in 2007 after she searched for the perfect blanket for her daughter who had chicken pox. Jo searched in vain and decided if she couldn’t find the blanket she was looking for then neither could anyone else and so The Atlantic Blanket Company was born. They offer the most beautiful luxurious blankets and throws blending contemporary design and colour with traditional weaving methods and natural fabrics.

Jo says “I don’t think I could have started this company anywhere but Cornwall. It is such an inspiring place to live and we are surrounded by creative and innovative people doing great things. That really gave me the confidence to have a go, and it certainly made finding local talent easy when it came to designing and building the website etc. Now our client base stretches all over the world and customers come back to us time and again to share their blanket stories. We sell baby blankets all year round, picnic blankets for the summer and gorgeous throws and blankets for all seasons, plus exclusive gifts and accessories. We also work with hotels and interior designers on bespoke projects, and are lucky enough to be able to do all that and walk the dog on the beach every day too!”

We think the Atlantic Blanket Website looks fantastic and sums up Jo’s attitude to her company and brand. To see her lovely blankets go to their website. Jo is also offering all our readers 15% discount Use TDT15

Learning The Light

Before I had gone on my first shoot with The Day That, I had asked Gavan and Chris which type of mornings they preferred to take photos, the glorious mornings with an artists dream etched across the sky, or those grey, murky days that make you glad you own central heating. Of course it was unanimous. They preferred the latter. With a challenge to make a visually strong image that shows the beauty and simplicity of these mornings, it would allow their creative juices to flow.

I have had some previous experience with photography and I was happy to take the colourful mornings that sold themselves. But of course, The Day That captures every dawn, and it isn’t up to us what the weather will be doing! And I knew that eventually I would have to take on the challenge they both loved so much.

Kieran Brimson Learning the light with The Day That

Eventually became immediately, and on my first day shadowing Chris on Porthmeor beach we both got soaked from the constant downpour and chilled to the bones from the cold. Through the wind and rain I still took in a lot from Chris about how the light can change during the morning and how to prepare for what the dawn can bring. The trend continued and my newly acquired wet weather gear was given a good christening. Each time joining Gavan or Chris on the morning shoots made me learn that it’s not just about the weather, it is also about the location.

Kieran in more testing conditions

Picking the right location proves to be key in getting great photographs as each location allows you to do something different. An obvious example is if you want to capture the sunrise, get on a beach that faces east. Less obvious examples are knowing about tides, and swells of the sea, and what locations to go to when there is a strong current, or when it is peaceful.

After shadowing them, the guys finally trusted me enough to let me have a camera in my own hands. It is easy to over think when trying to capture a shot, it is also easy to under think. I learnt quickly that the skill is finding that balance of knowing what you want but being confident enough that the decisions almost come naturally. On my first day I over thought. Each minute the sky is brighter and the sun doesn’t hang around to let you get that one last shot. Comparing my shots with Chris’ afterwards, it was clear who the pro was.

Beauty can be found in all conditions

The next day I came back and tried again, and the day after that I had another go, and then another go. Just in the few days I have been out with Gavan and Chris I can see how my images have improved. I still have a long way to go and a lot to learn, but with each return to the coast I have a little more experience that I can use to help me to relax and use the weather to my advantage. Gavan has been taking photos since 21st June 2005. That’s over six years of taking photos for him to get to the stage he is at. With any luck it won’t take me six years to catch up to him.

The Camerons on Holiday in Cornwall

David Cameron has baby in Cornwall

David Cameron is taking home a surprise souvenir from his holiday in Cornwall as his wife, Samantha was rushed into hospital yesterday and gave birth to a little baby girl. A good friend of mine also gave birth yesterday to a little baby boy at the same hospital, imagine that. I still don’t know if their paths crossed even so what a claim to fame.

I wonder what birth gifts the little Cameron will get? All the usual stuff no doubt? A news paper on the day she was born, oh look Daddy’s on the front cover!

One thing I am sure of is that my friends little boy will get one of our lovely photographs taken as the sun is rising into the Cornish sky.

Do you think if I sent one to David Cameron at number 10 he will receive it?

" St Ives"

A beautiful photograph of St Ives Cornwall

In the recent Coast Magazine awards, St Ives won 2 out of the 10 awards going.

St Ives itself won Best Family Holiday Destination voted for by the readers. We’re not surprised that St Ives is a hit with readers,’ says deputy editor and Coast Awards organiser Alex Reece. ‘For a small town, it offers such variety – from bucket-and-spade beaches to high culture.’

What he also could have mentioned was the astonishing light that St Ives and the surrounding beaches offer.

One beach that we go to take our stunning personalised newborn pictures is The Porthminster Café beach which also won an award for best Coastal Café. I have eaten here regularly and the food is fantastic with amazing views. I have photographed in front of the café on many occasions, it’s a great spot. Here are a few examples…. See what I mean

Godrevy Head, Godrevy Island and Godrevy lighthouse have a special place in our hearts here at The Day That as they feature in more of our photographs than any other area. Situated on the eastern side of St Ives Bay, they offer a strong contrast to the, often soft, colours of sea and sky in our dawn pictures.

This enigmatic area has drawn human interest for hundreds if not thousands of years, from several prehistoric archeological finds, through mining interests spanning several hundred years to the dangers of the rocks to shipping and the building of the Godrevy lighthouse. Now protected by the ownership of the National Trust, it has also become a Site of Special Scientific Interest with some of the best examples of coastal heathland in the UK.

I, like many artists and photographers, am drawn to the lighthouse. This iconic structure with its life-saving light has added mystery by being so close but almost untenable due to the dangerous stretch of water that separates it from the mainland. I was very pleased to learn of an exhibition being staged by the National Maritime Museum in Falmouth centred around Godrevy lighthouse with several works on display featuring the light over many years.

‘This captivating new exhibition at the National Maritime Museum Cornwall features artwork inspired by the iconic Godrevy Lighthouse.

Charles Thomas and Jessica Mann began collecting these works over 50 years ago, when they met and fell in love on an archaeological dig at Godrevy.  Since that time, the couple have collected various works of art, poetry and objects depicting the lighthouse, including pieces by artists such as Bryan Pearce, Wilhelmina Barns-Graham and Kurt Jackson.

Godrevy Lighthouse has seen considerable changes along the north coast and the exhibition includes artwork showing 1780s St Ives, buzzing with marine activity, right up to a 2003 Kurt Jackson piece depicting the calms of the St Ives coast.

Jessica Mann says: “Godrevy Lighthouse has become an icon; it is one of the images that represents Cornwall. This exhibition will give people an insight into the magic of the lighthouse, which Charles has known all his life and I first saw over 50 years ago.” ’

The exhibition runs until 29th August. There is also a general lighthouse exhibition at the museum that runs until the end of the year.

Sunrise at Godrevy a The Day That photograph

One of my favourite The Day That shots featuring Godrevy Island is this one from very early in our archive that surfaced recently with the help of a young lady called Evie to mark her first day. It’s from July 2005 and was taken by Gavan. It helped pave the way for the wonderful style that has developed as we create our unique christening gifts, special wedding gifts and beautiful anniversary presents.
