My First The Day That sale

The law of averages suggested that sooner or later one of my pictures would be used to celebrate a wedding, or welcome a newborn baby into the world. The question was how long would it take until this order came through.

There had been eager anticipation in the office, which slowly built up as I had more and more dawn photography under my belt. Days either side of mine began to sell and once or twice there a false celebration when realising the latest order was for the dawn on the day before or after I had gone out.

Eventually the order came through, 24th November 2011, picture 1. This picture would mean a lot to the family receiving it, it also, suddenly, was a picture that meant a lot to me, as it would be my first sale. Luckily there was no expense spared to celebrate the occasion, a large exhibition size picture in a dark wood frame was a great first sale.

There was a small wait before the print, as we had to replace the paper we use to print at that size to ensure the picture would be perfect. It was exciting to see it in physical form, and although it looked exactly the same as it did on the monitor, it looked so much better on paper.

The picture was then mounted and personalised, and the process was almost complete. With the border of the mount surrounding the image it was obvious why images should be printed, not just left to sit on a computer hard drive. The picture was stunning to look at and once it had been framed, I was very proud of the work I had done.

My first sale, a very proud moment.

It felt great to know that this picture would not only be hanging on somebody’s wall for years to come, but it would also be a picture that a family would have an emotional attachment to.

I look forward to taking many more pictures so they can be used to celebrate all of life’s special occasions.

The Camerons on Holiday in Cornwall

David Cameron has baby in Cornwall

David Cameron is taking home a surprise souvenir from his holiday in Cornwall as his wife, Samantha was rushed into hospital yesterday and gave birth to a little baby girl. A good friend of mine also gave birth yesterday to a little baby boy at the same hospital, imagine that. I still don’t know if their paths crossed even so what a claim to fame.

I wonder what birth gifts the little Cameron will get? All the usual stuff no doubt? A news paper on the day she was born, oh look Daddy’s on the front cover!

One thing I am sure of is that my friends little boy will get one of our lovely photographs taken as the sun is rising into the Cornish sky.

Do you think if I sent one to David Cameron at number 10 he will receive it?

On the 9th of May 2005 my beautiful daughter Ella was born which obviously changed my sleep pattern. Any new parent will tell you that nothing can prepare you for the change especially if you don’t just want to roll over and ignore the cry of your new baby but want to be fully involved.

It was about a month after this wonderful day that I started My First Day, June the 21st at 3.30am to be exact. Five years later I can still remember being excited as soon as I woke up and thinking, this is it the start of something very special.

A week later after getting up at this crazy time every day I was starting to flag and getting up was not so easy. Friends were laughing saying “well Ella will get you up so it won’t be a problem” This was true but Ella also got me up at 12, 1.30am and 3am so when my alarm went off at 3.30am I was like the living dead.

During this initial period my Dad came to stay and wanted to know more about this mad idea of mine. (To be fair he’d heard a few) So we decided that he would come out with me on a dawn raid. I gently knocked on his door at 3.45am and he murmured something and rolled over so I let him be and headed down the beach. This is what he missed and to this day it is still the most amazing sky I have ever seen.

Five years on and now called The Day That there are three of us that share the photography which means we all get to recharge our batteries.

Each of us has our idiosyncrasies when it comes to getting up on time.

I am known and have been seen to run up the road in my wellies after sleeping in just a little. I can’t kick my habit of the snooze button and my lovely wife gives me a gentle kick, which I am sure is more about stopping me having another snooze session than lovingly helping me on my way. What has surprised me is that I have never missed a sunrise and even when I’m late I always arrive just at the optimum time.

Chris and Gary are very similar in their pattern as they arrive at their chosen spot usually in complete darkness, never wanting to miss the magic that is the first glimmers of light and the start of the pre dawn. The first glimmer of light is usually my second snooze opportunity.

About a year ago, and I admit this freely I was struggling to keep my enthusiasm going. Chris told me something that I still do to this day. He said that what he does is lift his head off his pillow, swing his legs round and plant his feet firmly on the ground and think “This is my time” and get up. I’ve been doing this ever since. I still have my snooze time but hey that’s me.

But what really gets us up and being creative at unearthly times is the knowledge that someone somewhere is going to have a most fantastic day whether it be a birth of a baby or a Wedding day That’s how we keep getting up at this ridiculous time,  we are capturing the start of that day…. Fantastic!

Our Solar System

Our Sun and Planets

Isn’t it strange how some things just catch your eye and make you think WOW!

The BBC (along with many other news streams I expect) were running a story yesterday about a Monster Star that has been detected using the Very Large Telescope in Chile. It has absolutely no relevance to our everyday lives but you still read it and think WOW! 265 times bigger than our own sun… amazing!

The Sun against the Star

The Astronomical expert informs us that if it were in our solar system it would outshine the Sun the way that the Sun outshines the full Moon… WOW! I don’t even know what that means but I guess I would be using more than the 0.6 density grad filter I use most mornings when I’m out shooting the sunrise! Lucky then it’s 165,000 light years away.

A Very Large Telescope

And we thought the sun looked big in this shot of the sunrise Gavan took back in 2005.  We were reminded of this amazing shot from 5 years ago as someone has recently purchased it as a birth gift.

A fox in St Ives, cornwall

Gary gets a closeup look at a Fox in St Ives

We get to see some great things along with the fabulous dawns and sunrises that we’ve intentionally set out to capture.

Saturday 12th June found me in the Island car park at St Ives at 4am. I was minding my own business getting my camera onto its tripod when I caught a glimpse of something moving amongst the cars. A fox popped out and stood looking at me for several seconds. Luckily I had my point and shoot camera in my pocket and pulled it out as quietly as I could, hoping to catch a quick shot before it disappeared. However, instead of running off, the fox decided to trot towards me! It came right up to me and had a quick look in the boot of my car before deciding I had no food and wandered off to the bins behind the café. Amazing!

Two things I learnt from this, remember to take pictures instead of just gawping as the fox looks in your boot, and keep fresh batteries in your camera, as it was all it could manage to take these two shots before dying.

And this was the dawn I enjoyed afterward Possibly the best I have experienced so far and, I hope, a wonderful momento for celebrating a wedding, birth or other unique occasion from this great day.
